It is a proven fact that music indeed is one of the most effective therapies. It is a unique therapy for which we do not need complex tools or equipment. It is as simple as just putting a earphone in our ears and enjoying the music. Musicians like Shri Kunnakudy Vaidyanathan, (who was heading the Raaga Research Centre in Madras until his demise) have confirmed that music does have the capacity to heal us physically and mentally. He and his late father (who was one of the pioneers of raaga research) have researched and confirmed that music/raagas have the power to cure us of many ailments!

This is certainly good news to all music lovers. I personally believe in this completely and I have experienced the therapeutic effects of music innumerable times. Listening to melodious music automatically calms our mind and each raaga is said to have a unique medicinal property. The study in this field has been quite extensive leading to some pleasantly stunning results. The unique properties of a few raagas are listed below.

Keeravani- Good for heart

Rathipathipriya- Strength and vigour, remove ill-will

Shanmukhapriya- Sharpens intellect and instills courage

Kalyani- Destroys fear

Karaharapriya- Remedy for worry, stress and neurotic disorders

Abheri- Heals the mind

Shankarabharanam- Cures mental disorders, showers wealth!

Charukesi- Rejenuvates mind

Mohanam-Filters ill-effects of our bad qualities like anger, lust and attachment

Mayamalavagowla- Counters pollution

Anandabhairavi-Lowers blood pressure

For those who have faith, music is the best medicine. Music is a gift from God itself which can give us a lot of bliss and satisfaction. Let us use it as a medium to promote Love, Peace and Harmony and make our humble contribution for Samastha Loka Sukham.
