The Journey Within- The Drama of Life

Sriram S

Everybody says they want to be happy. We hardly ever come across anyone who willingly seeks negativity or troubles. Yes, we have all heard of masochists and also those that yearn for God and salvation through punishing themselves. But then by calling them masochists, we are certainly hinting at a truth that the ‘normal’ people do not (want to) hurt themselves. And yet, in our lives we come across more people going through trials and tribulations and turmoil than would seem ‘normal’ ---especially when everyone is seeking happiness.
What is the cause of this suffering then?
There are two things that could possibly be causing this seeming anomaly where everyone wants to be happy and is yet suffering. Before we look into that let us first understand that (while most would not like to hear or accept this) everyone of us is exactly where we want to be in our lives. It is a matter of choice and not chance. If we look around us, it becomes apparent that the choice to stay in a state of stress at office or in a relationship that does not work or any other state of negative equilibrium is our own. One single decision could take the employee out of a stressful job environment, the suffering wife from an abusive relationship and so on. It seems more difficult to comprehend but is true that even our physical ailments are choices that we make and bring upon ourselves.

Why would entire humankind do that? Everybody cannot be making a‘ wrong’ certainly! Here are two very plausible explanations:
1) Purpose. We need to be where we are because we need to learn something or experience something that would in turn take us to where we need to be next. If this is the case, then just being more ‘aware’ of this fact will bring a certain element of peace in us that will far transcend the travails of the present moment. How to practice this? -Through techniques on Mindfulness.
2) Trust. Another possibility is that we are stuck to the negative state since we are afraid to do what it takes persistently enough to come out of it. This stems from a lack of trust in our own selves or sometimes due to lack of a sustained effort and thereby homeostasis pulls us right back to the state of negative equilibrium we are trying to overcome.

If you resonate with these thoughts the takeaways apart life starts looking up immediately. Just try telling yourself that ‘everything is PERFECT’ for say 10-15 minutes on a trot and see how you feel :).Also, in my next post I shall list out some very simple techniques on mindfulness and how to work on building self-trust.
