Laxmi Narayan Aithal

TWO  FORMS  OF  DEVOTION.
Offering  a  leaf,  a  flower,  a  fruit,  etc.  with  Love  to  God  and worshipping  Him  through – studying  scripture,  chanting  hymns  of  praise,  etc.  are  endowed  with  a  part  of  love;  therefore,  it  is  also  called  devotion.  But,  this  scripture  doesn’t  deal  with  that  devotion;  forgetting  all  external  objects,  if  the  excellent  love  is  established  on  God,  this  Great  Love  itself  is  the  real  Devotion.  In  order  to  indicate  this  itself  characteristic  features  of  devotion  is  told : परमप्रेमरूपा, Form  of  Supreme  Love.
Devotion  shown  through  worshipping,  chanting,  etc.  towards  God  is  called  the  secondary  one (गौणभक्ति). The  first  aphorism  tells : भक्तिं व्याख्यास्यामः, we  clearly  explain  devotion.  The  word ‘devotion’  is  primarily  the  Supreme One  of  the  form  of  excellent  love;  still,  as  a  king  comes  with  his  retinue,  so  this  scripture  has  also  explained  the  secondary  devotion  not  as  its  main  aim;  and  the  main  aim  of  the  scripture  is  the  Supreme  Devotion. The  first  meaning  of  the  word  भक्ति is  the  Supreme  Love  towards  the  Supreme  Self,  the  God.  This,  itself,  is  the  subject  matter  of  this  scripture.

Shri Laxminarayana Aithal

MEANING  OF  THE  WORD  अतः
  •  The  word  अतः(therefore)  is  employed  to  indicate  the  application  of  the  scripture.  In  this  world,  everyone  is  naturally  having  ‘egotism’(अहंकार) which  is  an  obstacle  to  obtain  the  Supreme  Felicity  for  people.  This  egotism  swells  by  worldly  conducts  and  receives  different  forms  like : violence,  arrogance,  lust,  anger,  etc.  There  is  no  other  means  than  devotion  to  limit  this  egotism.  For  the  worldly  conduct  desire  is  the  cause  and  for  the  desire  egotism  is  the  one.  The  one  who  has  devotion  develops  dispassion  towards  worldly  objects  and  that  prevents  the  growth  of  egotism.

भक्तिः परेषानुभवो विरक्तिरन्यत्र चैषत्रिक एककालः । प्रपद्यमानस्य यथाश्नतः स्युस्तुष्टिः क्षुदपायोsनुघासम् ।।
(भा. 11. 3. 43)
According  to  this,  the  one  who  has  surrendered  to  God  obtains  devotion,  experience  of  God,  and  dispassion – all  the  three;  therefore,  egotism  is  subdued;  and,  the  Supreme  Felicity  is  obtained  without  any  obstacle.  Therefore,  this  scripture  is  for  the  use  of  worldly  people  so  that   they  may  obtain  the  summa cum laude  of  life (परमपुरुषार्थ).  )This  is  the  meaning  of  the  verse.
  • The  Supreme  Felicity  is  itself  is  really  the  desired  use  for  everyone;  still,  people  without  knowing  the  Form  of  Bliss  have  bewildered  that  they  obtain  happiness  only  by  enjoying  the  sensual  objects.  But,  the  reality  is  this : The  Bliss  is  equal  to  the  Brahman  which  is  the  Supreme  Reality.  God,  Himself,  is  the  real  Reality.  Nothing,  exists  other  than  Him.

भृगु went  to  his  father  and  requested  him  to  instruct  about  the  real  Reality  of  the  Brahman. His  father  वरुण said : From  which  Cause  all  living  beings  are  born;  from  which  Cause  they  are  living;  and,  in  to  which  Cause  these  are  merged – that  is  the  Brahman.  भृगु contemplated  within  himself  and  finally  concluded : The  Bliss  itself  is  the  Self  of  this  world;  all  the  living  beings  are  born  from  the  Bliss;  they  are  living  in  the  Bliss;  and,  at last,  they  merge  in  It.  Therefore,  if  It  is  seen  really,  we  need  not  obtain  the  Bliss  newly.  From  time  immemorial,  we  have  ignorantly  put  on  the  veil  of  egotism;  if  we  discard  the  veil,  the  Reality  that  God  is  our  own  Form  may  flash  in  the  mind. For  this,  attachment  towards  sensual  objects  should  vanish;  and,  love  towards  God  should  appear.  If  we  remove  the  egotism  through  devotion,  then  our  meanness (अल्पत्व) is  revealed;  and,  we  understand  that  the  mean  happiness  that  appear  in  the  trifling (तुच्छ)  sensual  objects  is  not  at  all  the  Real  Happiness  and  God’s  Own  Form  itself  is  the  Real  Bliss.
। छा. 7-24-1.

Where  nothing  is  seen,  nothing  is  heard  and  nothing  is  understood  that  Itself  is  भूमा;  then,  the  one  sees  something,  he hears  something,  and  knows  something;  and  that  is  mean (अल्प). Which  is  भूमा that  itself  is  Immortality;  then,  which  is  mean,  that  is  mortal. (Cha. 7-24-1).
According  to  this  sentence  of  the  उपनिषद्, really  the  भूमा named  God  Himself  exists  every-where;  in  spite  of  this,  worldly  people,  due  to  their  weak-mindedness,  see  the  trifling  sensual  objects;  by  enjoying  them  they  obtain  the  mean  reflecting  happiness;  and  they  suffer  in  the  worldly  life.  When  they  find  out  God  of  the  Form  of  Supreme  Bliss,  they  understand : सकलमिदमहं च वासुदेवः ‘I  am  वासुदेव and  all  these  too’.  Now,  egotism  is  the  obstacle  to  know  the  Reality;  and  its  removal  itself  is  the  greatest  help  of  the  devotion.  By  the  word  अतः the  devotional  guide (भक्त्याचार्यः) has  pointed  out  that  itself.

(Lakshminarayan Aithal has served for over 3 decades in Swami’s institution and is the former Principal of the Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Institutions at Muddenahalli. Inspired by Swami’s direct message to study the Upanishads, he first learnt Sanskrit and then studied the direct works of Adi Shankaracharya and Swami. Sincere perseverance led him to the reality of Aham Brahmasmi and He realized and experienced Swami’s words: “I am God and so are you”. He shares the import of the Upanishadic teachings with us in this series of articles.)

Sri Laxmi Narayana Aithal

In  the  world,  everyone  desires  to  have  Supreme  Felicity (Paramananda)PaP;  but,  he  never  tries  to  have  it;  he  is  caught  up  by  the  offensive  pride of  ‘me’  and  ‘mine’  and  by   the  defects  of  mind  like – desire,  anger,  greed,  mistaking  one  to  other,  arrogance,  jealousy,  etc.,  and , as  the  result  of  his  good  and  bad  works  he  attains  different  bodies.  Thus,  people  suffer  in  the  pulley  of  worldly  life;  due  to  their  actions  they  obtain  agreeable  and  disagreeable  and  accordingly  they  are  either  elated  or  depressed.  Only  devotion  to  God  and  no  other  means  helps  to  cross  such  living  beings  from  this  difficulty;  thus,  the  Spiritual  Guide Narada apprehending  through  the  scripture  and  experience  wants  to  preach  the  Principle  of  Devotion concisely  in  the  form  of  compilation  of  Aphorisms  on  Devotion and,  hence,  he  starts  his  scripture.  The following  is  the  first  aphorism  of  this  scripture :-
A  SOLEMN  DECLARATION IN  THE  BEGINNING  OF  THE  SCRIPTURE
अथातो भक्तिं व्याख्यास्यामः ।।1।।
ATHATHO BHKTHI VYAKHYANAMAH
1.Now,  therefore,  (we)  explain  devotion.

 Sri Laxmi Narayana Aithal

The  Self  neither  goes  nor  comes  from  anywhere;  neither  He  grasps  nor  He  gives  up  anything.  In  the  sky,  coming  and  going  of  the  clouds  don’t  change  the  pure  and  unpolluted  form  of  the  space.  Similarly, the egotism, etc.  appear  and  disappear   due  to  delusion  in  the  Self;  and  He  remains  eternally  changeless  in  the  extremely  Pure  Form  of  Awareness ( Nitya-Chaitanya-Roopah ).  We  have  told,  time  and  again,  that  the  states  and  the  egotism,  etc.  That appear in them- are not real.  If  we  remember  this,  the  doer-ship,  etc,  whatsoever  don’t   appear  in  the  Self.

THEREFORE, I AM THE AUSPICIOUS ONE.
Thus,  if  we  have  the  agreement   of  the  three:  the  illustration  of  rope  and  snake,  that  of  the  dream  and  that  of  the  reflection  in  the  mirror;  and  if  we  construe  with  the  Self,  we  observe  clearly  that  there  is  neither  any  selfhood  nor  the  world  in  us.  As  the  awareness  becomes  firm,  the  Awareness  that: ‘ I  am  verily  the  Supreme  Auspiciousness ( Parama-Shiva )  who  is  Eternally  Pure  and  Totally  Consummate ( Nitya-Shuddha-Paripurna )  and  who  is  the  Unique  Form  of  Existence-Awareness-Bliss’  becomes  rooted  in  us.
Those  who  have  the  backing  of  this  Awareness,  their  ignorance  is  got  rid  of  and  they  rise  in  courage;  their  licentious  behavior  is  avoided  and  they  naturally  have  a  religiously  righteous  behavior;  they  will  get  rid  of  indiscrimination  and  they  will  double  their  discrimination;  sense  of  injustice,  injury,  theft,  etc.  will  disappear  and  instead,  sense  of  justice,  compassion  and  interest  in  the  welfare  of  all  living  beings  will  be  got  rooted  in  their  heart;  idleness  will  give  way  to  steady  habit  of  worrying  for  others  benefit;  and  nowhere  grief  is  noticed.  But,  they  will   witness  the  sport  of   the  Supreme  Brahman  who  is  of  the  Form  of  Existence-Awareness-Bliss.  Therefore,  everyone  should  attain  this  Auspicious  Knowledge:  “ I  am  verily  the   Auspiciousness ( Shivoham )”.  And,  even  if  we  don’t  obtain  this  Knowledge  immediately,  at  least,  we  must  try  to  acquire  the  proper  qualification  for  the  Self-Knowledge.

(With this edition, we conclude this series of discussion on Entrance to Vedanta. We shall take up a new topic of discussion from the next edition of Atmajyothi).

Sri Laxmi Narayan Aithal

AGENCY, ETC.  ARE THE TRAITS OF EGOTISM?
(Objection: -) It  doesn’t  seem  to  be  proper  to  tell  that  there  is  not  any  relationship  between  the  body  and  ourselves.  For,  there  is  a  property-proprietary  relationship  between  the  body  and  ourselves.  The body is ours and we are its owners.  We perform actions through the body, etc.  And enjoy their resultant fruits.  In  order  to  enjoy  the  fruits  of  actions  performed  previously  this  body  has  been  endowed  to  us;  and  in  the  future  also,  in  this  manner,  we  can  have  other  bodies,  isn’t  it?
(Relief: -) In  the  practical  view,  the  following  concepts  are  real: (1).We  have  instruments  like  body,  organs  of  sense,  mind,  etc;  (2)  by  using  them  we  perform  actions  to  acquire  merits  and  demerits;  (3)  and  from  them  again  we  get  future  bodies.

Atmajyoti- Eternal Light of Satchidananda

Sri Laxmi Narayana Aithal

WHAT IS THE USE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE VEDANTA?
The  knowledge  of  the  Vedanta  may  be  reasonable,  but  a  few  people  may  find  that  they  don’t  get  any  benefit  from  that  knowledge.  In order to console them, the following verse has commenced:

Naaham Jaato Na Pravrddho Na Nashto Dehasyoktaah Praakrtaah Sarva-dharmaah I
